St Johns Wort is a herbal remedy traditionally used to treat mild-moderate depression, anxiety, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and insomnia. It contains many active substances, including hypericin and hyperforin, which are thought to affect mood. Usually taken as an over the counter capsule, St Johns Wort is actually better absorbed as a tea, made from the flower and petals.
Lemon Verbena or Vervain is one of the most well known herbs to use for healing emotions and mood swings. It is deeply penetrating to soothe and sedate the nervous system. This herb will stimulate neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. This helps to enhance your mood and create a sense of well being.
Ginkgo Biloba is an herbal supplement derived from one of the oldest species of trees — the Ginkgo biloba tree. Traditional Chinese medicine uses it to treat many ailments, including depression.
Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. Ithas been subjected to clinical trials in which it's ability to ease depression was tested against common prescription anti-depressants imipramine and fluoxetine. The studies reported that saffron was more effective than placebo and at least equivalent to the therapeutic doses of imipramine and fluoxetine.
